My Friend Root Rot
Director: Paul von Stoetzel

Hello Ghouls and Boils,
I first met Paul von Stoetzel back in 2006 at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival. Asleep in the Deep (2005) was screening there. I loved the film. Paul and I became friends and stayed in touch. When I told him about SNS he said – great, want to review my new stuff? I was game. So dearies, without further rambling… I bring you the first of two von Stoetzel reviews My Friend Root Rot. Enjoy my fiends!
My Friend Root Rot is a 9 minute documentary/biopic on horror podcaster “Root Rot” from “The Midnight Podcast“. The Midnight Podcast started in mid-2006 and has since become one of the sources for all things zombie. Though it is probably important to note that “Root Rot” no longer runs the show, having passed the torch to a long-time contributor named Corey after the 100th episode.
Root Rot is a peculiar individual. He is a horror geek who likes magic tricks. He is the host of a podcast and he wears a mask. He is a little bit awkward in front of the camera, but comes across as confident as a shock jock on the air. I think all horror fans can see a little bit of Root Rot in themselves. This documentary is charming and quirky. Paul has an eye for finding an interesting stories in the most unexpected places.
Final thoughts:
My one and only complaint about this documentary would be the length. I would have loved a little more time in this world. It is well filmed, the pacing was great and the editing was precise. If you like biopics of odd people, horror or have an interest in podcasting — I recommend you seek out this film. Paul updates his website Killing Joke Films with screening times/locations. I am not sure if it will be made available online, but I will update SNS if it is. I give My Friend Root Rot a 4 out 5.
