Publisher’s Comments:
The new novel in the New York Times bestselling Dresden Files series.

Long ago, Susan Rodriguez was Harry Dresden’s lover – until she was attacked by his enemies, leaving her torn between her own humanity and the bloodlust of the vampiric Red Court. Susan then disappeared to South America, where she could fight both her savage gift and those who cursed her with it.

Now Arianna Ortega, Duchess of the Red Court, has discovered a secret Susan has long kept, and she plans to use it-against Harry. To prevail this time, he may have no choice but to embrace the raging fury of his own untapped dark power. Because Harry’s not fighting to save the world…

He’s fighting to save his child.

About the Author:
A martial arts enthusiast whose resume includes a long list of skills rendered obsolete at least two hundred years ago, Jim Butcher turned to writing as a career because anything else probably would have driven him insane. He lives with his wife, his son, and a ferocious guard dog.

Hello Ghouls and Boils,

Tonight we have another review from Minion Lee Clark Zumpe – Changes by Jim Butcher. Changes is the 12th book in the Dresden Files series. About 3 years ago I reviewed one of the Dresden audio books, so admittedly I was very curious to see where this series had gone. Lee’s thoughts on the new book make me even more so. But I’ll just let him tell you about it… Enjoy, my fiends.

Abstrusely,
Sarah L. Covert

No one can mix it up like Jim Butcher.

Within the pages of the Dresden series, Butcher has crafted an extensive mythic world that is inexorably entwined with the visible world, making the fantastic marvelously plausible – if only for the hours each reader spends with their nose buried in his books.

Butcher summons up wizards, vampires, and fairies along with shady hitmen, Mafiosi, and icons of various world mythologies; planting them firmly on an ornately decorated dance floor of his own design. When the music starts, the carnage begins.

And the books just keep getting better.

Changes, the 12th book in the series, once again demonstrates that the author is evolving along with his character. Read a few chapters from the first book in the series and compare it with the first few chapters in the most recent – the difference is evident. Butcher’s writing skills have improved dramatically.

This tale opens with a startling disclosure for Harry Dresden – a shocking eye-opener that comes attached to a plea for help. The messenger, Susan Rodriguez, happens to be Dresden’s former lover. Their relationship was cut short when she was attacked by his enemies, leaving her torn between her own humanity and the bloodlust of the vampiric Red Court.

Arianna Ortega, a Red Court duchess, learns a critical secret Susan has long kept, and she plans to use it against Harry. So severe and personal is the threat that in this installment of Butcher’s popular series, Dresden is pushed to the edge, struggling against his moral compass, fully cognizant of the fact that to accomplish his objective, he may have to tap into dark powers he has always avoided on principle.

At its heart, Changes retains the hardboiled detective fiction tone that makes this contemporary fantasy series so compelling. Butcher’s wry sarcasm and gallows humor serve to make his central character all the more appealing.

Returning readers will find many familiar faces, along with some new and intriguing players. The author has a real gift for re-inventing legends and for plucking ideas from other genre giants and bending their creations to suit his own mythos.

Final Thoughts:
As the book’s title suggests, this latest entry is a crossroads for the entire series – and Butcher doesn’t disappoint. Frantic pacing and unrelenting cliffhangers drive this plot at breakneck speed, leaving the reader gasping for air. For the longtime Dresden reader, Changes delivers a dozen or so revelations and sets the scene for the next phase of the series. I give this book 4.5 out of 5.

I’ve been thinking for a while that Dresden was going through some serious changes. His whole raison det’re has been getting out from under the thumb of the white council. Sounds like he’ll be heading out of there in style.
