Lars von Trier (Europa, Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark) shook up the film world when he premiered Antichrist at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. In this graphic psychodrama, a grief-stricken man and woman—a searing Willem Dafoe (Platoon, The Last Temptation of Christ) and Cannes best actress Charlotte Gainsbourg (Jane Eyre, 21 Grams)—retreat to a cabin deep in the woods after the accidental death of their infant son, only to find terror and violence at the hands of nature and, ultimately, each other. But this most confrontational work yet from one of contemporary cinema’s most controversial artists is no mere provocation. It is a visually sublime, emotionally ravaging journey to the darkest corners of the possessed human mind; a disturbing battle of the sexes that pits rational psychology against age-old superstition; and a profoundly effective horror film.

Antichrist was the succes de scandale at Cannes for its director, Lars von Trier (The Kingdom, Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark), no stranger to controversy. At Cannes Charlotte Gainsbourg rightfully won Best Actress for her harrowing work in Antichrist. She gave an exhausting and risk-taking performance as a woman mad with grief, whose psychologist husband (brilliantly played by Willem Dafoe) attempts a getaway to their vacation house, Eden, that will heal her – but her madness has only begun. Dafoe soon realizes Eden is rife with supernatural occurences. Are these native to Eden, or is his wife fueling them with her damaged psyche? He has to endure much pain and torture to learn the truth.
Antichrist could well be von Trier’s masterpiece. It manages to shock, provoke, and/or entertain everyone who sees it. Von Trier is not only a master of the cinematic, but for the duration of Antichrist, he becomes the master of his audience and manipulates their reactions to his disturbing art as well. Criterion’s handsome 2-DVD set (1-DVD Blu-ray) is uncut, and features multiple extras that shed some insight into the film’s many layers of symbols and meanings. This is the definitive presentation of a longtime provocateur’s masterstroke.
